HT Imam, political adviser to the prime minister, has said media had exaggerated his speech of November 12.
He made the remark during a press briefing at the Awami League president’s Dhanmondi office in Dhaka, five days after the speech.
HT Imam had suggested that activists of ruling Awami League's student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), need only pass the civil service exam and he would see to the rest. The statements was widely criticised in the media.
“The media exaggerated my speech and presented it in a wrong way," Imam claimed.
“BNP and Jamaat took the advantage of it.”
Regarding Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) issue, he said: “I had advised Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men to immerse themselves in studies for a better career. We want to train them well since only the eligible candidates will be chosen.”
“If you want, go check the number of BCS recruits and see how many BCL activists got the job.”
Regarding elections, Imam said BNP and Jamaat had lost their hope given the people’s support for Awami League.
But, the Awami League formed the government with the support of the people.
When asked whether he discussed the issue with prime minister, Imam said: “The prime minister is ill and is resting. I did not want to disturb her with such a personal issue.”
“The media has published only a part of my speech. There is no question of resigning,” Imam dismissed the suggestion when asked whether he would resign.
Imam had said on Nov 12: “Whenever we approach the prime minister with a request for a job she asks if the man requiring a job has a BCL background and then she tells us to manage it by all means.”
