Khaleda: Halting movement after the January 5 election was wrong

Update : 11 Nov 2014, 07:02 PM

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday reportedly admitted to making a wrong decision in suspending the party’s movement after the January 5 election, and said the movement should have been continued.

Khaleda held a meeting with the party’s vice chairmen and joint secretaries-general at her Gulshan office on Monday to analyse the current political situation and to plan the next course of action.

The former premier said that taking part in the 2008 general elections was not a good decision as there was room for analysing the then political situation.

“We should continue our movement. Stopping the movement after the January 5 election was not right. If we had continued our movement, the situation might be different,” a joint secretary general, seeking anonymity, quoted Khaleda as saying.

He said Khaleda told them that their decision to take part in the 2008 elections was not proper as that election was “stage managed.”

In the 2008 election the BNP-led alliance faced an electoral catastrophe as it secured just 32 seats in parliament. The alliance then decided to boycott the 10th parliamentary election.

A vice chairman seeking anonymity said Khaleda asked the party’s vice-chairmen and joint secretaries-general to work sincerely so that the people can rely on the party that will bring a change if voted to power.

He also said the BNP chief said she would maintain regular contact with district leaders to galvanise party activities.

The BNP’s vice chairmen and joint secretaries-general stressed strengthening the Dhaka city’s BNP unit before waging a movement. Some party leaders suggested strengthening the ties between the BNP and members of the 20-party alliance because they said the there was a conspiracy to tear it apart.

She is scheduled to hold a meeting tomorrow with the party’s standing committee members, to chalk out a movement strategy.
