Deprived leaders attack Annie-Tuku’s car

Update : 07 Nov 2014, 07:48 PM

Deprived and aggrieved student leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) vented their grievances by launching an attack on former student leaders Sahiduddin Chowdhury Annie and Sultan Salahuddin Tuku yesterday.

A section of deprived JCD leaders attacked the vehicle carrying Annie and Tuku at the Bijoy Sarani intersection while they were going to party founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave to pay tribute to mark the “National Revolution and Solidarity Day”.

Witnesses said some of these leaders gathered near the military museum before going to Zia’s grave and around 11.20am Tuku and Annie’s vehicle was crossing the area. As they saw Annie and Tuku they chanted slogans and threw bricks at the vehicle, damaging the front part of the vehicle, but Tuku and Annie managed to escape injuries.

Later senior deprived leaders brought the situation under control and left the place.

When Chhatra Dal leaders placed wreaths at the party founder’s grave neither Annie nor Tuku was seen in the graveyard.

Since the announcement of the new committee of Chhatra Dal headed by Rajib Ahsan and Akramul Islam as president and general secretary respectively, a section of deprived leaders demanded cancellation of the new committee and expulsion of Annie and Tuku from the party. These leaders even vandalised the party’s Nayapaltan office and also blockaded the office for one day.

Sensing that the situation might worsen, party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a meeting with the deprived leaders but the meeting ended inconclusively. Party standing committee member Mirza Abbas also held a series of meetings with them but to no avail.

There are allegations that Annie and Tuku picked their loyal leaders to the new committee. The deprived leaders at one stage centred their demand only on expulsion of Annie and Tuku. They made several abortive attempts to launch attacks on Annie and Tuku.
