BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia said the people inspired in the ideology of late president Ziaur Rahman, were still determined to protect the independence and democracy of the country.
The BNP chief issued a statement on Thursday ahead of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day on November 7.
The statement read: “The people of the country, who are inspired by the ideology of the late president, Ziaur Rahman, are still firm to protect the democracy of the country, even after the demise of the leader.”
Claiming that the sovereignty of the country is weakening gradually under the leadership of the Awami League government, she said: “The ruling Awami League has captured power by force. It is repressing the opposition leaders and activists, who are fighting for democracy."
Terming November 7 as a historical day for the nation, the BNP chief greeted the countrymen on the eve of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
On November 7 in 1975, Ziaur Rahman came out of house arrest and took over as the new military chief.
In 1975 Zia became the first military ruler of Bangladesh after a period of political turmoil following the August 15 assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.
