Visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has told BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia that a democratic ruling system is essential for the continuation of socio-economic development of the country.

“Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Khaleda Zia agreed that a democratic ruling system, human rights and rule of law is essential for the socio-economic development of Bangladesh,” Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, vice chairman of the party, said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at a city hotel on Saturday evening.

Mobin also said Japan's Prime Minister is well informed about the "one-sided" election of January 5.

“Japanese government knows that in the January 5 election major political parties did not participate. He [Abe] hopes that they would go to an acceptable solution through talks which will be acceptable to Bangladeshi people and international community,” Mobin said quoting Abe.

In the 30-minute meeting Khaleda and Abe discussed bi-lateral issues including the economic development of the country.

Mobin said at the beginning of the meeting, the former premier expressed gratitude to the Japanese prime minister for coming Bangladesh after 14 years.

Khaleda also recalled the longstanding relations between Japan-Bangladesh and Japan’s role for improving socio-economic development in Bangladesh.

BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Vice-Chairman M Morshed Khan and advisers to the BNP Chairperson Reaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed were present in the meeting.
