Moudud, Abbas among 41 indicted for arson and attack on police

A court yesterday indicted BNP Standing Committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and 38 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 20-party alliance in connection with a case filed for torching vehicles and assaulting police at Naya Paltan in the capital on March 6 last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Tareq Mainul Islam Bhuiyan fixed October 12 for starting the trial.

A total of 21 accused, including Moudud, Abbas and Gayeshwar, turned up at the court yesterday. They pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after the court read out the charges to them.

Among the others indicted are BNP leaders Abdullah Al Noman, Barkatullah Bulu, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, Aman Ullah Aman, Jubo Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal, Habibunnabi Khan Sohel and former Chhatra Dal chief Sultan Salauddin Tuku, former Chhatra Shibir chief Delwar Hossain and Jamaat-e Islami leader Shafiqul Islam Masud.

Eighteen other accused have been on the run while the defence counsel had filed a time petition, seeking time for two absconding accused Taleb and Selim to turn up at the court. But the court refused it and issued an arrest warrant against them.

Earlier on March 27, 2013, police pressed charges before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court against them.

Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and some others senior leaders on yesterday appeared before the court in three cases filed under the speedy trial act.

The cases were filed with different police station in the capital on charges of torching vehicles and assaulting police during anti government movement in last year.
