BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday said the party would run a campaign after Eid not for waging any war but for ensuring people’s suffrage.
“We will not engage in any war. We will conduct a movement in protest against the government’s repression, and reintroduce people’s voting right and the rule of law to the country,” she said.
Khaleda called upon all, to join the next movement against the government.
The BNP chairperson made the call at an Iftar party hosted by the Federal Union of Journalists in association with the Dhaka Journalists Union at the National Press Club.
The former premier urged the party leaders and activists to unite and set aside all sorts of differences to put a strong resistance against the government’s repressive measures.
Portraying a gloomy picture of the country, Khaleda said people are suffering today in every moment of their lives and also feeling insecure.
“There is no job opportunity. Poverty is on the rise and the unemployed youth have been passing their days in frustration.”
She pointed to the government’s disregard for people’s sufferings, saying it was rather busy indulging in corruption.
Khaleda said the capital Dhaka had turned into a polluted city plagued by a tedious tailback in line with the poor condition of highways.
Where is the government and where are their activities? she posed a question.
The BNP chief claimed that no election took place on January 5.
The diplomats in the country advocated for an election through talks, she said, adding that an unelected government had no right to run a country.
Khaleda alleged that journalists had also been repressed by the ruling party’s men and those raising voices against the government met the terrible fates.
Senior journalists and BNP leaders attended the Iftar party.
