11 receive bullets in AL factional clash

At least 11 people received bullet injuries in a gunfight between two groups of the ruling Awami League centring a land dispute at Lohagara upazila in Chittagong on Wednesday.

The injured are Md Mannan, 20, Enamul Haque, 37, Nurul Kabir, 37, Nurul Alam, 37, Jamal Uddin, 67, Manju Begum, 50, Mina Bali, 18, Md Robin, 18, Mizbah Khatun, 22, Bimal Dey and Rasheda Begum, 35.

They have been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Md Shahajahan, officer-in-charge of Lohagara police station, said the Awami League factions – one led by Salauddin Hiro, general secretary of the upazila unit Awami League, and another by Nurul Absar, publicity affairs secretary of Dakkhin Zilla unit, were locked into a clash.

The clash ensued as the supporters of Absar attacked their rivals in bid to grab a piece of land in Bus Station area of Amirabad Bazaar of Lohagara upazila, said the OC.

The police official added that the clash triggered a gunfight that left the 11 injured.

On information, police came to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Pankaj Barua, assistant sub-inspector of CMCH police outpost, said the bullet-riddled individuals were admitted to different wards of the hospital.

There had been a longstanding rivalry between Absar and Hiro over the piece of land in the area, the OC said, adding that none was arrested and no case filed with the police station till filing of this report.
