Muhith criticises BNP in budget speech

Update : 05 Jun 2014, 10:05 AM

Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhit has criticised BNP for boycotting the January 5 election in his budget speech in the parliament on Thursday afternoon.

In the beginning of the speech to present proposed budget for the fiscal 2014-15, Muhit said: “...a large political party, by boycotting the election, vainly tried to disrupt our democratic process."

He also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took steps to hold the national election under an all-party government despite not being bound by any constitutional obligation.

The finance minister said: “This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that an elected Government has stepped into its second term in office having successfully completed the first one.”

“This bears testimony to the unflinching trust that the people have chosen to bestow on us,” Muhith added.

BNP among some other major parties boycotted the 5 January 2014 citing the election would not be fair under the incumbent government.

However, the government held the election citing it as the constitutional requirement and won 154 of the total 300 seats uncontested.
