Three political parties, including the ruling Awami League, submitted their expenditure return on the 10th parliamentary elections to the Election Commission yesterday.
The other two parties are Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) and Jatiya Party (Manju).
According to the return, AL spent Tk25,392,712 in the January 5 national polls while BNF Tk5,7 98,000 and JP (Manju) Tk12,36,000.
The Awami Leauge Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap submitted the return to the commission, saying that “We have submitted a Tk25,392,712 polls expenditure return to the EC, which was spent by the party for campaigns, meetings, advertisement etc.”
According to the EC laws, any party participating in polls has to submit their poll expenditure return to the commission within 90 days after gazette on election results has been published.
Sirajul Islam, Acting Secretary to EC, confirmed the submission, saying “If any party does not submit the return, the commission can cancel the party registration as per law.”
Earlier, the EC sent notices to the contested political parties warning them to submit the return within 30 days, because they missed the last submission date on April 23, the secretary continued, adding that “So far 534 out of 543 candidates have submitted their individual polls expenditure reports.”
He stated that the EC ordered the returning officers concerned to file cases against those who yet to submit their reports yet.
In the general elections, Jatiya Party (Ershad), Workers Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Tariqat Fedaration, Gonotantri Party, National Awami Party (NAP), Gonofront, Khelafat Majlish and Bangladesh Islami Front also took part.
Of them, Bangladesh Islami Front informed the EC that they had withdrawn their candidatures from the polls.
