Court dismisses complaint against Khaleda

Update : 31 Mar 2014, 04:14 AM

A Dhaka court has dismissed the complaint lodged against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for “defaming Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman” with her comments on Zia’s presidency.

AB Siddiqui, president of Jononetri Parishad, filed the complaint on Monday morning accusing Khaleda for her comments at a programme in the capital on March 27.

After recording the statement of the plaintiff, Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Arifin at 3:30pm refused to accept the complaint.

The move comes a day after lawmakers agreed to take actions against the BNP chief, for deliberately distorting history, at Sunday’s parliament session.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia claimed that her husband Ziaur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh and was its first president, the plaintiff lawyer said.

Such comments have defamed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman worldwide, AB Siddiqui alleged according to lawyer Rowshan Ara.

The latest comments of Khaleda Zia and her elder son, BNP senior vice chairman, Tarique Rahman regarding Zia’s presidency has sparked a wave of hype.

After those claims, Dhaka Tribune found that BNP’s official website introduced Zia as the seventh president. But, the website was “unavailable” within days.
