A new political party titled ‘Bangladesh United Islami Party’ (BUIP) was officially launched yesterday at the National Press Club auditorium.
Former Awami Olama League central leader Mohammad Ismail Hossain is the convener of the party.
Hasan Mahmud, publicity secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL) and former environment minister for the ninth parliament, was present at the launching ceremony as chief guest.
Addressing the occasion, Hossain, who left the Awami Olama League in 2011, said: “BUIP is a pro-liberation party and aim of the party is to create the spirit of Islam in people’s minds.”
“The country has no pro-liberation Islamic party,” he said.
Hinting at Jamaat-e-Islami, the AL leader said: “The party influences terrorist and militant groups using the name of Islam. That’s why some countries are criticising Bangladesh.”
Jatiya Party leader Fakhrul Imam and Delwar Hossain were present at the programme, among others.
