Return to the path of democracy or history will not be forgiving, BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the Awami League on Wednesday.
“There is still time to come forward and take initiative towards establishing a democratic state,” the BNP leader said in a press conference held around noon.
“The government set an unprecedented example with the January 5 elections. The polls failed to obtain the acceptance both home and abroad.”
“Awami Legaue has been politically defeated. Now, to divert the attention elsewhere, the minority community was attacked in several parts of the country,” he claimed.
The BNP leader condemned the recent “extra-judicial” killings in the country pointing to the joint forces which are cracking down in “vulnerable” areas.
He backed BNP Chairperson's Khaleda Zia's statement over the raids conducted in Satkhira. “Begum Zia cannot be blamed for sedition for her statements.”
“Such words from the mouth of Syed Ashraf to confuse the people are not expected,” he told journalists in response to a query.
Awami League slammed Khaleda and demanded an apology within 24 hours for her statement hinting that outsiders were involved in the Satkhira crackdown.
Fakhrul blamed the government for the “disappearances” and killing of anti-government supporters. “The government is using the law enforcers for this.”
He alleged that the government was wiping out “the opposition” and that it was a “long term plan of the government to eliminate BNP.”
The BNP leader claimed that 187 party activists disappeared and 227 members were killed nationwide. He demanded a neutral probe into the matter.
