A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected the bail and remand pleas of six senior BNP leaders, including Barrister Moudud Ahmed, and sent them to jail.
The leaders are MK Anwar, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon, Khaleda Zia’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mizanur Rahman passed the order in the afternoon, rejecting their bail and remand pleas in three cases filed with Motijheel police station.
However, the court permitted the law enforcers to quiz the leaders at the jail gate within seven working days.
Earlier in the day, the investigation officers (IO) of the three cases sought a total of 21-day remand for the leaders for their alleged involvement with the mayhem centring around the Hefazat-e-Islam rally on May 5 in Motijheel last year.
Of the six BNP leaders, Moudud, Anwar and Rafiqul were detained from in front of Sonargaon Hotel on November 8 last year, while Mintoo and Shimul were detained outside Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence a few hours later.
On December 26, Khokon was detained in front of Matsya Bhaban in the capital.
On the other hand, another court rejected the bail and remand pleas of BNP leader and former Dhaka city mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka and sent him to jail.
Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Kumar Dey passed the order in the afternoon.
He was arrested in connection with a murder case filed in connection with the May 5 Hefazat mayhem.Later, he was placed on remand.
