BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has called upon the government to cancel the “farcical elections” and come to consensus for holding a free, fair and credible election.
The BNP chief made the call through a statement issued on Monday evening, hours after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged the main opposition BNP to come to consensus by severing ties with the Jamaat.
“I am calling on the government to cancel this farce in the name of election and reach a consensus for a free and fair election under a non-party government,” said Khaleda.
“People have boycotted the one-sided polls. They did not response to the ‘act of killing democracy’,” she said.
Khaleda alleged: “The Awami League is trying to retain in power by force, terrorism and misusing the state power.
The government has no ethical and constitutional right to remain in power. None has the authority to run the country without the people’s approval.”
She added: “The ‘farcical election of January 5 proved that a free, fair and credible election is not possible without a non-party government and an acceptable Election Commission.”
I want to say the political crisis will not be resolved by keeping me under house arrest and oppressing the opposition leaders.”
She also urged the party leaders and activists to continue the ongoing movement.
