The Awami League said yesterday the completion of the national elections was a “victory for the nation’s democracy” and end to all speculations and conspiracies.
“The BNP Chairperson tried her best to foil the polls but, ignoring all barriers, people participated spontaneously. Voter turnout was satisfactory, which proves that people had trust in this election,” Awami League advisory council member Tofail Ahmed said.
He added that the government had made the elections free, fair and neutral apart from some stray incidents.
The polls-time minister was addressing a press conference at the party chief’s political office at Dhanmondi immediately after voting ended in the afternoon.
“People did not heed opposition leader’s call to boycott the polls,” Tofail said.
He thanked the Election Commission, law enforcers, officials and also people for casting votes. Tofail alleged that Khaleda Zia had tried to create a situation like 1971, by siding with Jamaat. “But we overcame all the conspiracies.”
If the election had not been held by January 24, 2014, there would be an unimaginable political crisis in the country, Tofail said.
“The election was held under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as the constitution dictates. Our polls-time government assisted the Election Commission in holding a free and fair election,” he added.
