Khaleda barricaded, Paltan empty

Police forces were on the alert throughout the capital since Monday morning in view of the extension of the Dhaka March programme of the BNP.

Police were cordoning off the Gulshan residence of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. Women police were also seen.

Meanwhile, the empty premises of BNP's Nayapaltan headquarters were heavily guarded by police. No activists were seen around the office.

Law enforcers were deployed through all key intersections and entry points in the capital. Few inter-city buses were seen plying city streets unlike Sunday.

No detentions were heard of from city streets.

Dhaka Tribune correspondnet Mohammad Al Masum Molla said the law enforcers near Khaleda Zia's residence was unchanged.

A batch of women policemen were standing guard at the gates. The two sand-laden trucks were blocking the road leading out of Khaleda Zia's house.

Dhaka Tribune correspondent Hayat Mahmud said police were keeping a tight watch on Nayapaltan, Bijoynagar, Kakrail and adjacent areas.

BNP Nayapaltan office premises were empty. A prison van, a water cannon and an armoured vehicle were parked nearby. No activists were seen.

A barricade was put up on the road leading from Farirapool to Bijoynagar. Passers by were frisked frequently. But, the patrols of Rab and detectives were less.

A few public buses of the Gulistan-Uttara, Mirpur-Motijheel and Mohammadpur-Motijheel route were seen plying streets.

Dhaka Tribune correspondent Emran Hossain Shaikh said the National Press Club premises, where Awami League and BNP supporters clashed on Sunday, were cordoned off.

Inside the premises, two separate rallies, of the Awami League and BNP factions, were being held.

Law enforcers were ready for any chaos with prison van, armoured vehicle and water cannon at the Paltan intersection.

Meanwhile, stick-wielding Awami League supporters were parading around Bangabandhu Avenue premises. The party's Dhaka metropolitan unit leaders took position outside their party headquarters.

Dhaka Tribune Supreme Court correspondent Nazmus Sakib said the apex court premises were also under a security blanket.

On Sunday, BNP and Awami League supporters clashed inside the court premises in an unprecedented event in the history of Bangladesh.

Dhaka Tribune correspondent Abu Bakar Siddique said Abdullahpur, a key entry point to the capital in Uttara, was under a more relaxed security system.
