Police have sued several opposition alliance leaders including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for allegedly instigating activists to torch a bus at Malibagh in the capital on Saturday night, killing one and injuring three.
Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Shibli Noman said the case was filed by Sub-Inspector of Ramna Police Station Johirul Islam around 12:30am on Sunday.
In the case, 15 persons have been named for execution of the attack while a bunch of BNP’s top- and mid-level leaders named for provoking the incident. Some unidentified 15 activists have also been made accused in the case.
The alleged instigators are Fakhrul; Vice-Chairman Sadek Hossain Khoka; Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas; joint secretaries general Aman Ullah Aman, Salauddin Ahmed, and Barkat Ullah Bulu; Executive Committee member Salauddin Ahmed; and city unit Member Secretary Abdus Salam.
Acting secretary general of Jamaat Dr Shafiqur Rahman, former Chhatra Shibir president Masud and a number of Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal leaders have also been made accused of instigation, giving support and proving money for the arson attack. A total of 15 local-level Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal and BNP leaders and activists have been named as the executors, Shibli Noman said.
The case statement says at least 20 unidentified miscreants carried out the arson attack around 7:30pm on Saturday, the first day of BNP-led 18-party alliance’s 72-hour countrywide blockade.
Chased by pickets, the bus driver lost control and crushed Habibur Rahman to death and injured a rickshaw-puller. Two passengers of the bus also suffered burn injuries in the bomb attack.
The case is filed only two days after Shahbagh police had lodged a case against Fakhrul and 15 other senior BNP leaders in connection with an arson attack on a bus near Matsya Bhaban. Nineteen passengers sustained burn injuries, of who two later died at hospital.
