Pro-AL lawyers vent anger in court

Update : 17 Nov 2013, 09:36 PM

It was a day of celebration for the pro-BNP lawyers and a day of frustration for the pro-Awami League lawyers on Sunday, centering the verdict in a money laundering case at Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in the capital.

As soon as Judge Md Motahar Hossain of the Special Judge’s Court-3 acquitted Tarique Rahman, the son of opposition leader Khaleda Zia, the pro-BNP lawyers brought out victory processions and distributed sweets. On the other hand, the Awami League supporting lawyers expressed anger over the verdict and blamed the prosecution and the judge for a conspiracy.

Although Tarique’s friend Giasuddin Al Mamun was awarded a seven-year jail sentence in the same case, it was unable to douse the spirits of the pro-BNP lawyers who cheered on the court premises.

A good number of Supreme Court lawyers were also seen at the court to watch the high-profile case’s verdict.

Prior to the verdict, a security archway had been installed on the courtroom door, while security measures were beefed up around the court premises.

The judge reached the packed courtroom on the fifth floor at around 11:55am.

Mamun – who was produced on the dock a few minutes before the judge came – did not seem tensed during the verdict. Wearing a white-shirt, he read a newspaper, and spoke to lawyers and journalists till the judge came. Pro-BNP senior lawyer Sanaullah Miah announced to his fellows that no awkward situation should be created whatever the verdict might be.

The court read out the verdict against Mamun first, with no immediate reactions coming from either side.

However, the pro-BNP lawyers burst into joy as soon as Tarique was pronounced free. Some of them showed victory sign from the fifth-floor’s veranda before bringing out a procession.

On the other hand, the pro-Awami League lawyers started shouting: “We do not accept this verdict.”

Some of the lawyers shouted “catch him, catch him,” when ACC Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol was about to leave the court room with Chief Prosecutor Anisul Haque.

Failing to leave the place, Kajol took shelter in another court room. Lawyers led by Advocate Shaon, who is the special public prosecutor of Dhaka Judge’s Court, then kicked on the door of Special Judge’s Court-3 in anger.

The agitated lawyers accused Kajol for carrying out secret negotiations with the defence lawyers in exchange of money.

Kajol later left the court building through an alternative staircase, as the pro-Awami League lawyers paraded the court premises chanting slogans against the case prosecutors.
