A journalist was injured after being attacked following a procession organized by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Dhaka Metropolitan South unit in the capital's Dhanmondi 32 area on Tuesday morning.
The incident reportedly occurred during a media briefing after the procession, when an argument broke out between journalists and some Jamaat leaders and activists.
According to witnesses, the procession began around 8:30am as part of a program marking the 77th founding anniversary of the Awami League. Leaders and activists of the Dhanmondi zone of Jamaat's Dhaka South unit participated in the event.
Those present included Mustafizur Rahman, Mujahidul Islam Shahin, Anisuzzaman and Jahinur Rahman, among other local leaders and activists.
Witnesses said tensions arose during the post-procession briefing after journalists were allegedly referred to as "friends of the Awami League." A verbal altercation followed, which later escalated into a physical attack.
Daily Sakal reporter Mahfuzur Rahman Shishir was injured in the incident. Witnesses said he sustained injuries to his face and was bleeding when fellow journalists rushed him to Bangladesh Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Mujibur Rahman Khan, a working committee member of Dhanmondi Thana Jamaat, described the incident as "unfortunate."
Speaking to reporters, he said: "Someone from outside may have entered our program and caused this unwanted incident."
