A Dhaka court on Sunday granted a two-day remand to former councilor of Ward-40 of Dhaka South City Corporation Abul Kalam Azad Mintu in connection with a case over the attack on the motorcade of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
Md Jewel Rana, a metropolitan magistrate, passed the order after a hearing, during which Azad was produced from jail. The investigation officer and Sub-Inspector Md Hasanuzzaman of Shahbagh Police Station, had requested a seven-day remand for further questioning.
The defence lawyer filed a petition seeking cancellation of the remand and bail for the accused. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and granted a two-day remand.
According to the case statement, on April 22, 2015, Khaleda Zia left her residence in Gulshan to campaign for BNP-backed candidate Tabith Awal in the Dhaka North City Corporation election. When her motorcade reached the Bangla Motor intersection in Shahbagh around 5:30 pm, it was allegedly attacked in a pre-planned manner.
During the incident, vehicles in the convoy were vandalized and several people were beaten and injured. A case was subsequently filed over the attack.
