Dhaka-17 constituency Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Dr SM Khaliduzzaman has expressed regret over an incident involving an argument with army personnel after a video of the exchange went viral on social media.
The incident occurred when Dr Khaliduzzaman attempted to enter the Dhaka Cantonment area with a gunman. On-duty army personnel stopped him, informing him that there is no provision for entering the cantonment with weapons or gunmen. An argument followed, during which the Jamaat candidate was seen speaking in an agitated manner. The video later spread on social media, sparking widespread discussion and criticism.
On Tuesday (February 3) afternoon, Khaliduzzaman explained the incident in a Facebook post. He wrote that an “undesirable situation” had arisen a few days earlier regarding entry into the cantonment area with on-duty members of the Bangladesh Army, which he described as “the pride and honor of Bangladesh and the vigilant guardians of sovereignty,” leading to mixed reactions.
He also said although the issue had already been resolved, a group with vested interest was attempting to “fish in troubled waters” by using the resolved matter to divert the situation in a different direction.
Expressing regret at the end of his post, Khaliduzzaman said he regretted the incident and would remain cautious to ensure that such misunderstandings do not occur again in the future.
Regarding the matter, Inter Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) Director Lt Col Sami Ud Doula Chowdhury told Dhaka Tribune that the “unwanted incident was resolved immediately” and that there was “nothing new to say” on the issue.
