Fakhrul: BNP wants to build peaceful, non-communal Bangladesh

'We do not want to encourage those who practise religion-based politics'

Update : 01 Feb 2026, 12:00 AM

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said, “We cannot trust those parties that do not believe in our independence. We do not want to encourage those in this country who practise politics based on religion. We fought in the Liberation War in 1971. Millions of people sacrificed their lives for this country. Our mothers and sisters lost their honour. At that time, Jamaat collaborated with Pakistan, yet they have still not apologised for it.”

He made these remarks on Saturday afternoon while carrying out electioneering in Akcha and Chilarang unions of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.

The BNP Secretary General said, “I have spent my entire life in politics for the liberation of people. Over the past 15 years, while demanding the people’s right to vote, I have endured immense hardship and harassment. There were 117 cases filed against me. I have been imprisoned 11 times and spent three and a half years in jail. However, I find peace in the fact that today the people have regained their right to vote. I urge the public to exercise this right properly and make the 15 years of struggle meaningful.”

He added, “One party is trying to mislead Muslims by claiming that voting for the ‘scale’ symbol will guarantee entry into heaven. There is no such statement written anywhere that voting for the scale will lead to heaven. In reality, Allah may grant heaven to those who practise good deeds. Do not be afraid. Go to vote without fear, cast your vote, and return home safely. BNP has always stood by you and will continue to do so in the future.”

Leaders and activists from various levels of the BNP were present during the campaign.
