One person was allegedly shot and at least five others were injured during clashes that took place between law enforcers and shutdown supporters in Satkhira town's Kadamtala area on Wednesday morning during the 48-hour hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami.
Local unit of Jamaat claimed the casualty to be one of their own and identified him as Monirul Islam.
Police detained five Islami Chhatra Shibir activists, four motorcycles and 10 bicycles from the area.
Witnesses said some hundreds of Jamaat-Shibir supporters began picketing on Satkhira-Jessore road in the morning. They vandalised at least nine buses near the entrance to Satkhira town.
Some handmade bombs were blasted when local police and Border Guard Battalion (BGB) rushed to the spot.
Satkhira Additional Police Superintendent Joydev Chakrabarti said police fired 30 rounds of short gun and lobbed some teargas shells to drive away strike supporters.
"Situation is now under control, five Shibir activists have been nabbed from scene. Four bikes and ten cycles were seized." he said around midday.
Meanwhile, strike supporters blocked roads in Binerpota, Bankal checkpost and Ramchardrapur areas adjacent to the town with logs. Processions were also brought out during the day.
Most of the shops and establishments in town were seen closed.
