NCP: Arresting Nusraat Faria, sending her to jail undermine justice system

NCP urges law enforcement agencies to exercise caution when accepting cases

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has said that incidents such as arresting and sending actor Nusraat Faria to jail are turning the judicial process into a farce.

The party in a statement issued on Monday added that such tokenistic and arbitrary actions, instead of holding those directly responsible for the July killings to account, trivialise the justice process surrounding the atrocity.

The NCP mentioned that Nusraat Faria was arrested by the Immigration Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Sunday in an attempted murder case filed at Vatara police station.

On Monday, she was sent to jail on orders from the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.

The NCP stated that these actions are turning the justice process into a mockery.

"We have seen former president Abdul Hamid, accused of involvement in attacks and shooting during the July uprising, leave the country earlier this month without any obstruction," the party said.

"The identities of 626 individuals who were sheltered in various cantonments in the aftermath of the uprising remain undisclosed," NCP added.

"Moreover, those directly involved with the July massacre, including those in the fallen fascist regime and its supporters, are still active in public spaces and on social media, continuing their anti-citizen activities."

The party said failing to bring those truly responsible for the massacre to justice, while sending people to jail over arbitrary allegations, contributes to a tendency to downplay the gravity of the genocide.

“A section within the current state structure and administration is working to sabotage the justice process for the July massacre and render it questionable,” said the NCP.

“Yet we have seen no visible progress in the trial so far, despite the interim government’s decision to form the International Crimes Tribunal 2 to accelerate proceedings. No formal gazette notification for its formation has been published as of yet.”

The NCP said it expects to see visible progress in the trial process by July and called on the interim government to take prompt and appropriate measures toward that goal.

Additionally, the NCP urged law enforcement agencies to exercise caution when accepting cases, especially given the prevalence of frivolous charges and the so-called case trade.
