The proposed national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year, the largest in Bangladesh’s history, has been described by the National Citizen Party (NCP) as overly ambitious and detached from economic realities.
The remarks were made in a statement issued on Thursday by Dr Atik Mujahid, head of the NCP's shadow budget committee.
He said that while the government has projected a budget deficit of around Tk250,000 crore, the actual shortfall could reach nearly Tk450,000 crore.
According to him, the proposed revenue collection target of Tk695,000 crore is unrealistic under the current economic conditions and is unlikely to be achieved.
“I believe the revenue shortfall could exceed Tk200,000 crore,” he said.
The statement further noted that, based on a more realistic assessment of revenue collection, the proposed budget could become the largest deficit budget in Bangladesh’s history.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the proposed national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in parliament on Thursday.
The proposed budget, the first under the current government, has an outlay of Tk938,000 crore.
