BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said people are getting a taste of democracy amid election fever, but not fully yet.
Speaking to journalists at his residence in Mehedibagh, Chittagong, on Tuesday while exchanging Eid greetings with party leaders and activists, Khasru added that while a festive election atmosphere prevails, true democracy is yet to be fully realized.
"Fascists are a force that seizes power in one way. But there is another force that keeps inventing new methods to stay in power.”
He added: “The fascists could not stand, and the people are ready to ensure that this force also does not survive."
Khasru said: "After the fall of the fascist government, an electoral atmosphere is now prevailing in the country. Everyone is feeling a sense of joy and excitement. A festive environment can be seen.”
He added: “People are getting a taste of democracy, though not entirely. Nevertheless, they can now witness the election atmosphere, and there is enthusiasm and interest in elections among everyone."
Khasru further said: "For 16–17 years, we fought for our aspirations—for freedom and democracy. Our aspiration is for a parliament run by elected representatives who are accountable to the people. The people have been waiting for this aspiration to be fulfilled."
