The left political partners of the 14-party combine recommended to the ruling Awami League to expand the alliance, ahead of the national elections.
They also requested the Awami League leadership to conduct electioneering and finalise the names of candidates in consultation with all the component organisations.
The suggestions came up at a meeting of the 14-party alliance held at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office on Tuesday with AL Advisory Council Member Suranjit Sengupta in the chair.
Mohammad Nasim, the 14-party co-coordinator told the reporters: “If BNP places their caretaker government proposal in parliament, the ruling party will discuss the issue,” he said adding that the talks can also take place outside the parliament.
Sources said the alliance leaders would soon meet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and discuss all the issues with her. The alliance partners asked AL to forge a greater unity with all pro-liberation political parties.
At the meeting, left political parties emphasised on ensuring an election, with the participation of all parties after resolving the existing political deadlock through talks.
Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon stressed the need for greater unity while Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal General Secretary Sharif Nurul Ambia asked AL leaders to launch election campaign and distribute nomination papers.
Communist Kendro leader Asit Baron Roy recommended holding dialogue with the main opposition BNP to resolve political crisis.
The meeting decided to launch a countrywide campaign jointly with all the partners of the 14-party alliance to thwart the false propaganda of BNP-Jamaat and to project the government’s success stories before the nation.
On activities undertaken by the opposition to oppose the government, Nasim, also the AL presidium member, said: “It is not the time for resistance, rather the time has come to participate in elections.”
Talking to reporters Suranjit Sengupta said the crisis over election-time government would not have surfaced if BNP had joined the parliament when the caretaker government provision was scrapped from the constitution.
Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon said dialogue on polls-time administration could be held inside or outside the parliament.
Alliance leaders Dilip Barua, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Anisur Rahman Mollick, Wajed-ul Islam Khan, Fazle Hossain Badsha, Sharif Nurul Ambia and Nurur Rahman Selim also attended the meeting.
