BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said whenever they have fallen under the grip of tyranny, Ekushey February has inspired them to resist it.
"After progressing through the stages of the Language Movement, we gradually moved towards the Liberation War," Rizvi said on Friday morning after placing a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar on the occasion of International Mother Language Day and Martyrs' Day.
"Inspired by Ekushey, we struggled for 16 to 17 years. Many of our leaders and activists were killed and subjected to crossfire. With this inspiration, we have traversed a long and bloody path leading to July and August."
In response to a question, he said: "National elections must come first. After that, whichever political government comes to power will oversee the local government elections. Democratic practices must continue, and the election process should not be prolonged."
