Saki: Reforms, elections are both essential

'The government has a significant responsibility to determine the path Bangladesh will take'

Zonayed Saki, the Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, on Friday said that if anyone supports reforms but suggests delaying elections, the people will not accept it.

Similarly, if reforms are overshadowed in the name of elections, that too will not be accepted.

"We need both reforms and elections. To achieve this, we must reach a minimum consensus. Without a minimum national consensus, uprisings can face setbacks," he said.

He made these comments during a protest rally organized by Ganosamhati Andolon in front of the National Press Club.

The rally was held to protest against border killings, soaring commodity prices, uncontrolled syndicates, and the recent increases in VAT and taxes.

Zonayed Saki said: "A confrontational situation has been created between reforms and elections. We believe reforms and elections are not opposing issues. Reforms are necessary for elections, and elections are essential after completing reforms."

He added: "The government has a significant responsibility to determine the path Bangladesh will take. To ensure that no fascist regime can be established in the country again, and to bid farewell to the fascist system along with the escape of fascists, people have sacrificed their blood. If we want to make this a reality, we must maintain unity among ourselves."

The chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon further said: "We are experiencing a historic moment. Students and the public are playing a crucial role in the uprising, and all political parties in the country are involved in this movement. People now demand accountability for their rights. Border killings are still occurring, and the people of Bangladesh will never accept such killings."
