Sarjis Alam, general secretary of July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, said that the Awami League should not be allowed to participate in elections before facing the genocide trial.

He wrote in a post on Facebook: “We will not allow the Awami League to participate in any election before the trial of the genocide. If necessary, a second uprising will occur.”

He made this post on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon.

A few hours earlier, Hasnat Abdullah, the convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, also posted on Facebook about the Awami League.

He wrote: “Seeking power by stepping on the blood of martyrs and turning to Delhi for guidance is a betrayal of the people's desire for liberation. Those who take steps for the rehabilitation of the Awami League will be identified as enemies of the people in history.”

In his Facebook post, Hasnat also wrote: “Those who carry the spirit of the July uprising and wish to reflect the hopes and aspirations of the masses can have no other political stance than demanding the trial of the Awami League in post-24 Bangladesh.”

On Monday, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, the Youth and Sports Ministry adviser in the interim government, said at a discussion: “When we speak of banning the Awami League on behalf of the government, political parties are trying to obstruct it in their speeches. If the fascist Nazi party of Germany was banned in 1945 and remains banned, it should be clear what the fate of the Awami League should be.”

Asif Mahmud made these remarks at a discussion titled “The Mass Uprising and Future Bangladesh through New Eyes,” held at the Jahangirnagar University Liberation Stage at 10:30pm on Monday.
