Hasnat Abdullah calls for widening of Comilla–Sylhet highway

'Whenever we speak to the minister or the administration, they cite bureaucratic complications,' he says

A major highway in Debidwar, Comilla, has effectively turned into a “trail of deaths”, prompting an emotional appeal in Parliament by Comilla-4 (Debidwar) MP Hasnat Abdullah to prevent further loss of life caused by its poor condition and rising number of accidents.

Raising the issue on a point of order during a discussion on the President’s speech in the Parliament on Wednesday, the lawmaker broke down in tears as he urged immediate action to widen the road. The session was chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal.

Hasnat Abdullah said, “The road in Debidwar has become a procession of deaths every day. In this month alone, 23 people have died in road accidents. Whenever we speak to the minister or the administration, they cite bureaucratic complications. No work has been done on this road for the past 10 to 12 years.”

He added, “Although the highway was supposed to be upgraded to six lanes under a Line of Credit (LoC) project, it remains only 18 feet wide. I can no longer face the people of my constituency. They are so angry that they might detain me. I request you to issue a ruling to the concerned minister so that immediate steps are taken.”
