Hefazat-e-Islam former joint secretary general Mamunul Haque has claimed that a conspiracy is being carried out to destroy the spirit of the July Revolution, similar to how the spirit of the Liberation War of 1971 was distorted.
Speaking at a conference at the Jessore Central Eidgah on Tuesday afternoon, Mamunul said: “Awami League’s ignorance will be remembered just like the days of ignorance before Islam (Aiyame Jahiliyyah). Hefazat activists have been the primary victims of this ignorance. Many of our leaders and activists were killed at Shapla Square, and 1,400 others were arrested. This persecution was carried out for speaking out against the pro-India government.”
Mamunul further alleged that efforts are being made to de-Islamize Bangladesh.
He added: “Enemies of Bangladesh are conspiring abroad to undermine the unprecedented unity forged during the July Revolution. Everyone must remain vigilant.”
Mamunul also emphasized: “The struggle for independence wasn’t just a nine-month battle. We have fought for centuries, first against the British, then against the leaders of West Bengal in 1947, and finally against West Pakistan in 1971. Many of our scholars have shed their blood in these battles. However, the fascist Awami League government has distorted this spirit of freedom.”
He continued: “During the July Revolution, people from all walks of life came together in unprecedented unity. Now, conspirators in India are trying to destroy that unity. We will resist this conspiracy at all costs.”
Warning against the influence of atheism on students, Mamunul said: “Any attempts to mislead students will be met with strong resistance from their guardians.”
He added: “We will not tolerate any conspiracy against Bangladesh. Every inch of this country, including Sant Martin's Island, will be defended, even if we have to sacrifice fresh blood to protect it.”
