The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Monday asked banks to unfreeze the accounts of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
A letter from the Central Intelligence Branch (CIC) of the NBR has been sent to Bangladesh Bank on Monday regarding the activation of all bank accounts of Khaleda Zia.
The move came 17 years after it had ordered banks to block the accounts.
According to NBR and Bangladesh Bank sources, the newly appointed chairman of NBR Abdur Rahman Khan made this decision after consulting with the chief advisor of the interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus.
The CIC of the tax administration in August 2007 directed banks to freeze the accounts of the BNP Chairperson.
The decision was based on the recommendation of a panel formed during the then Army-backed caretaker government.
Since then, her accounts have remained blocked.
BNP has on several occasions demanded to unfreeze the accounts.
The former caretaker government also seized former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's bank accounts in 2007.
After she won the election and became the prime minister, his account was opened.
