Non-party government a must for peaceful polls: Prof Yunus

Update : 22 Aug 2013, 06:30 PM

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus yesterday claimed that no neutral and fair election could be held in Bangladesh without a caretaker government overseeing it.

“There is no scope to have a peaceful election without a non-party neutral government. There must be an election and that is under a non-party neutral government,” Prof Yunus said, according to agencies.

He observed that the black cloud of chaos was getting closer to Bangladesh, and if it happened, because of a section of people or some parties’ desire, the people of the country would not forgive them.

The microcredit pioneer and founder of Grameen Bank came up with the observation during a meeting with Krishak-Sramik Janata League chief Kader Siddiqui at Yunus Centre.

Prof Yunus also laid emphasis on the participation of all political parties in the election and urged the political leaders to reach a compromise.

“We appeal to our political leaders to reach a consensus. Resolve problems through talks.”

He said the people of the country do not want chaos and there is a need for the participation of all parties in the next polls. “Peace should prevail in the country.”

Prof Yunus at a programme on Wednesday said the force which wants to destroy the Grameen Bank should not be given the scope to rule the country.

He also said the people of the country would resist the government’s conspiracy to destroy the world-famous microcredit entity that received Nobel Peace Prize.

Kader Siddiqui said the next election could not be held without a non-party neutral government.

He said the country could not be safe in the hands of those under whom Grameen Bank was not safe.
