Leaders of the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) on Sunday discussed how human rights in Bangladesh are under constant threat.

They were speaking at a sit-in on the occasion of International Human Rights Day at Bijoy 71 Square near the party’s central office.

Prof Dr Abdul Wahab Minar, joint convenor of the AB Party, said: “We reject the biased election schedule. It is against the will of the people and a betrayal of our fundamental promise.”

“It was a gross breach of human rights to foil Mayer Dak's event yesterday (Saturday), which had been organized by and for the families of victims of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances by police authorities,” he added.

Advocate Tajul Islam, joint convenor of the AB Party, said: “This unelected government has violated every fundamental right guaranteed by our constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since 2008, this government has deprived the nation of free and fair elections. We seek the restoration of our rights and the opportunity to cast our votes in a credible election. Additionally, we advocate for the reunification of citizens who have been victims of enforced disappearances with their families and loved ones.”

Member Secretary Mojibur Rahman Monju said: “Although Bangladesh is a signatory to the Human Rights Convention, our civic and political rights are consistently being violated. Dissent suppression, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and unlawful detentions have become routine under this autocratic government.”

Joint Member Secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuaad expressed concern about the country’s law enforcement agencies consistently violating various human rights, leading to past sanctions from the US.

“There is apprehension that if these violations persist and a farcical election occurs, additional sanctions and international disengagement may follow, severely impacting our trade and exports starting next January,” he added.
