A peace rally of the ruling Awami League has started at the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque with countless leaders and activists in attendance.
Although the rally organized by three affiliates of the ruling party–Jubo League, Swechasebak League and Chhatra League–started at around 3.30pm on Friday, people had been converging at the venue since the morning.
Dhaka TribuneMainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, general secretary of Jubo League, claimed 500,000 people had already joined the rally.
Rainfall started just before the start of the program, but leaders, including Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain, said the rally would take place regardless.
Dhaka TribuneAwami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, who is also road transport and bridges minister, will give a speech as chief guest at the rally.
