Update : 22 Dec 2021, 09:06 PM

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasod-Inu) has sought President M Abdul Hamid’s initiatives and demanded the enactment of a law on the formation of the Election Commission (EC) to avoid the “embarrassing” situation arising  every five years on the constitution of a new EC.

Hasanul Haque Inu, president of Jasod, disclosed his party’s demands to the media following the dialogue with the president at Bangabhaban on Wednesday afternoon.

He said: “We are looking forward to the president's role in drafting and enacting the law so that we will not be embarrassed about forming the EC every five years.”

“We look forward to the president with regard to finding a lasting solution to rectify this situation. We said that the president should direct the government to form a legal structure to form the EC,” Inu opined.

On the second day of the dialogue, a seven-member Jasod delegation met with the president and submitted a written proposal.

At the beginning of the discussion, the Jasod leaders applauded the president for initiating a dialogue with the political parties on the formation of the EC.

Regarding the formation of a search committee, the Jasod leaders opined that it was necessary to put an end to all debates by enacting a specific law, including the process of the formation of search committee.

“It is not advisable to suggest the name of a person directly for the search committee. It is advisable to nominate the members of the search committee from among persons holding constitutional positions, including the judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, the chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), and the comptroller and auditor general,” proposed Jasod.

Apart from Jasod President Inu, its General Secretary Shirin Akhter, Executive President Rabiul Alam, Standing Committee Member Mosharraf Hossain, Vice Presidents Mir Hossain Akhter and Rezaul Karim Tansen participated in the dialogue.

The term of the current EC is scheduled to expire on February 14 next year. To form the new EC, President Hamid started a series of dialogues with the political parties from Monday, beginning with the Jatiya Party, the main opposition party in parliament.

Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP) has been invited to hold the dialogue at 4pm on December 26 while Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) will meet the president at 6pm the same day, President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin said.

Bangladesh Tarikat Federation and Khelafat Majlish will participate in the discussion at 4pm and 6pm on December 27 respectively while Bangladesh Workers' Party is scheduled to join on December 28 at 4pm.

On December 29, Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) will hold the dialogue at 4pm while Islami Oikya Jote exchange will exchange views with the president at 6pm on the same day.

Currently, there are 39 registered political parties, according to the EC website. But only nine parties have representation in parliament.
