The main opposition BNP kept silent following the verdict of war criminal Ghulam Azam, the former chief of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, its staunchest political ally.
Mahbubur Rahman, a standing committee member of the party denied making any comments until after seeing the full verdict. BNP had earlier denied making comments following the International Crimes Tribunal’s (ICT) verdicts against Jamaat leaders Delwar Hossain Sayedee, Abdul Quader Mollah and Mohammad Kamaruzzaman.
Two BNP leaders, Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Abdul Alim are also behind bars facing trials on charges of crimes against humanity.
It has repeatedly claimed that the ICT is not of international standards and the convicted leaders were victims of political vengeance.
