‘Tougher movement after Eid if government doesn’t hold dialogue’

Update : 15 Jul 2013, 06:11 AM

The main opposition BNP on Monday threatened that there would be a movement after Eid if the government did not hold any dialogue on poll-time interim government.

“We still believe the government will sit with the opposition to talk about a poll-time nonpartisan interim government. However, if it doesn’t, we will go for the movement after Eid,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of the party, told journalists before leaving for London to attend a seminar on July 17.

He said it is the responsibility of the ruling and opposition parties to ensure proper democratic practices in the country.

“We said again and again that we want a peaceful transfer of power, and that only through election,” he said.

Asked about the London seminar’s agenda, he said, “The next general election, human rights situation of the country, good governance and democracy are among the issues to be discussed in the seminar. Awami League was also invited to attend the seminar.”

Asked about the possibility of meeting with the party’s Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, Fakhrul said: “There is no schedule to hold any formal meeting with Tarique Rahman, but we can talk over the phone.”
