BNP Standing Committee Member MK Anwar Saturday said the government was trying to change the results of the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election in their favour.
“If the government changes the polls result, the country will go through a sticky patch. The government and the Election Commission will be responsible for that situation,” he told reporters at the EC secretariat after a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.
The BNP leader said the EC would announce the polls result as per the law and the returning officer was entrusted with the task.
On Friday, BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi demanded that the results of the Gazipur City Corporation election be declared on the polling day after counting the votes.
The demand came after Returning Officer Matiar Rahman’s declaration that the GCC election results won’t be announced on the polling day, but the day after.
MK Anwar, however, said the ruling party men were monitoring the GCC election from the returning officer’s office to change the polls result.
He alleged that Sub-Inspector Bashar cast votes in booth 7 of Tongi Government College polling centre under ward 41.
A woman cast 36 fake votes in Tongi Government School polling centre under ward 54, the BNP leader claimed.
He also alleged that Rab personnel in some areas barred voters from casting votes in the name of not having National Identity Cards with them.
Many voters failed to exercise their franchise due to the Rab interference, he said, adding that as per the election rules voters did not need any National Identity Card to cast votes.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the police arrested BNP polling agent Shukur Ali in ward 20 from his residence early in the morning, he added.
“We raised allegation about irregularities in GCC polls. The CEC asked the returning officer to take action in this regard,” he said.
EC secretary Dr Mohammad Sadik told reporters that violence did not occur during the GCC polls. Voters were casting their votes in a festive mood.
About allegations raised by BNP, the secretary said the EC had already taken steps in this regard.
