GSP suspension government’s failure: BNP

Update : 28 Jun 2013, 10:22 AM

Main opposition BNP accused the government on Friday for the suspension of Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) privilege, imposed by the US government a day before.

While addressing a programme at Jatiya Press Club in the afternoon, the party’s acting secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the incumbent government has to take the responsibility.

“The government’s latest failure is that the US government has postponed GSP privilege for Bangladesh. This proves that the government-appointed lobbyists in Washington have failed completely,” he said.

The spokesperson of the party also said: “Many workers were killed in Rana Plaza and Tazreen disasters. But the government is yet to take any measure to prevent further catastrophe.”

Mentioning the World Bank’s decision to withdraw its fund from the Padma Bridge project, Fakhrul said: “And in such a way, our dreams are being shattered one after another just because of the incumbent government’s failure.”

In another programme at the same premises, another BNP Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed said the US government’s decision to postpone GSP facilities for Bangladesh is nothing but a “stigma."

“Bangladesh’s international goodwill will be tarnished for such decision. This will not only hamper our economy but also hamper our image towards the international community,” he said.

Expressing apprehension of huge setbacks for the country, Moudud said: “Due to such move, many industries would shut down which would create huge unemployment in the country.”

Moudud, also a former industrial minister, said: “Due to the government’s failure, the highest remittance earning sector RMG is at danger. The government has to take the responsibility.”
