Update : 18 Jun 2013, 04:03 AM

Unparliamentary and abusive remarks by a ruling Awami League MP on Monday prompted the opposition MPs to walkout of the assembly, that was focused on discussing the national budget.

Nazma Akhter MP claimed that the opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s mother was “Laxmi Rani Marma, not Tayeba Majumder as we know.”

Her offensive remarks continued, despite Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury’s intervention, when she said, a drunkard Tarique Rahman, Khaleda Zia’s eldest son, tried to violate a model on board an aircraft.

She asked the Speaker not to intervene. The Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, was present during Nazma’s speech.

This created tension in the House, resulting in the opposition staging a walkout at around 9:32pm the BNP lawmakers returned to the House after around 10 minutes.

Despite the Speaker’s repeated warnings on using objectionable words, personal attacks continued as Andaleeve Rahman of Bangladesh Jatiya Party, an ally of the main opposition BNP was given floor to speak in the parliament.

“Earlier, I have talked about the Shahen Shah of the power sector, Aziz Khan. But now I will talk about the Badshah of the power sector,” he said.

“He is Syed Abul Hossain,” said Andaleeve, alleging that people know about his involvement in the Padma bridge scandal.

The opposition MP alleged that the government had awarded several power projects to the former minister Abul Hossain, for who the authorities pumped in £19.8m, after the World Bank declined funding the project.

He said, thousands of middle-class families lost everything in the share market, but the government had not even questioned the capital market scammers.

Andaleeve also criticised the Awami League for siding with the army during the rule of immediate past caretaker government.

Later on another AL MP Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury also launchedpersonal attack on Andaleeve.
