As tension escalates over Wednesday's clash at Naya Paltan and Saturday's BNP rally, it would seem that the party's supporters have gone to war against the ruling Awami League and the government on social media.
Several Facebook pages run by the opposition BNP are spreading a video and photos of a person who was seen with the police wearing an Argentina jersey while shooting at protesters during the clash on Wednesday afternoon which left one dead.
The police later confirmed that the person was a member of the Ansar force.
The Awami League has criticized the BNP for branding the individual as an armed cadre of the ruling party in a post on its official Facebook page.
The pages in question are BNP Media Cell (verified page) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party - BNP.
Recently, some Facebook pages operated reportedly by supporters of former Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur and the BNP claimed that the banks were running out of cash, triggering panic among depositors.
The government has said some Tk50,000 crore was withdrawn from different banks in a span of a couple of days but added that people were redepositing the funds after realizing their mistake.
Online political campaigns have been very effective in Bangladesh for the last 8-10 years, to support and flare up street movements, as seen during the Shahbagh movement, the Shapla Chattar mass rally and the road safety movement.
