A Dhaka court yesterday sent BNP leaders Amanullah Aman and AZM Zahid Hossain back to jail after rejecting petitions for their remand and bail, on charges of torching vehicles, assaulting policemen and exploding bombs in front of the BNP central office at Nayapaltan on March 6, during a rally of the BNP-led 18-party alliance.
Metropolitan Magistrate Keshab Roy Chowdhury passed the order after hearing both parties.
Paltan police station’s Sub-Inspector Robiul Islam, who is investigating the case, produced the accused with a petition for a 10-day remand, saying the remand was required to find other intentions behind the vandalism.
Defence counsel Sanaullah Miah filed the bail petition; he also prayed to the court to reject the remand petition, saying the accused were not listed in the FIR, were patients of cardiac disease and diabetes, and were under treatment.
He alleged that they were shown arrested under ill motives.
Public prosecutor of Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court Abdullah Abu opposed the bail plea, saying the accused were “creating drama in the name of treatment,” so, they needed to be remanded to allow for proper investigation.
