The BNP on Thursday alleged that the government was making “practically impossible” the day-to-day political activities of the opposition.
The party reiterated its call for a dialogue to reach a consensus on poll-time interim government to hold a neutral and impartial election participated by all political parties.
“The ruling party assigned police, Rab, BGB and armed party men to resist the opposition’s programmes. Even the police is barring them from printing and distributing leaflets,” the standing committee members said in a press release.
The press release signed by Shamsuzzaman Dudu, adviser to the BNP chairperson, said whenever an opposition leader talks to the media on behalf of the party is arrested.
Leaders and activists are being arrested from the jail gate soon after their release, said the press release.
“We urged the government again to create a congenial atmosphere and to protect people’s voting rights so that the transfer of power takes place in a democratic way,” they said renewing their call for dialogue.”
The standing committee members alleged that the government had closed all the doors on dialogue.
Terming the government mass killer the statement said the government, on the one hand, is urging the opposition to sit for dialogue, but on the other hand it is saying the next elections will be held under Sheikh Hasina.
Dudu said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on May 4 urged the government to discuss the poll-time interim government within 48 hours and also invited the prime minister to a tea.
“The standing committee thinks the government has missed a great opportunity by not responding to the call for a negotiation,” the press released said.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia held a meeting for two and a half hours with the standing committee members on Wednesday night to analyse the current political scenario and to devise the next course of action at her Gulshan office in the capital.
The meeting condemned the shutting down of transmission of Islamic and Diganta TVs, threat to 15 national daily editors for protesting the arrest of the acting editor of the Amar Desh.
The government has shackled the media and gaged freedom of expression.
News of corruption and misdeeds of prime minister and her families were published in the international media, the statement noted.
