The ruling Awami League (AL) has never claimed that only party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and nobody else could be the head of the poll-time interim government, said Local Government and Rural Development Minister Syed Ashraf Sunday.
Briefing reporters at the AL president’s Dhanmondi office in the capital Sunday afternoon, the Awami League spokesperson also said the decision about who would head the interim government could be made through a dialogue.
Hinting that the constitution could be amended again if needed, the AL secretary general said, “If whatever is in the constitution remains unchanged, why a dialogue would be needed?”
“That is why we proposed a dialogue to reach a solution,” Ashraf said.
At the press conference, Ashraf set out a call to all the leaders and activists of the ruling party to take all out preparations for the coming national polls.
The ruling AL and the main opposition party BNP and its allies have been in a standoff since the incumbent parliament brought the 15th amendment to the Constitution in June 2011 scrapping the caretaker government (CG) system following a Supreme Court order.
Both the parties have largely been stubborn with the demands – BNP wants restoration of CG system for a dialogue to take place while AL has repeatedly said there was no way that another unelected administration could rule the country again.
