BNP has expelled Taimur Alam Khandakar, the former convener of the party's Narayanganj district unit, who had contested and lost in the recently held Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) mayoral polls by going against the party decision.
The party on Tuesday also expelled ATM Kamal, the general secretary of the party's Narayanganj city unit, who had worked as Taimur's chief polling agent.
The party's decisions were announced in separate letters, signed by Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, issued in the evening.
The letters said in accordance with BNP's constitution, Taimur and Kamal both were expelled from all positions, including primary membership, for violating party discipline.
On January 3, Taimur was also removed from the BNP chief's Advisory Council for his decision to run for Narayanganj mayor as an independent candidate.
On December 25, he was relieved from the post of BNP's Narayanganj district unit convener as well.
On Sunday's NCC election, Taimur was beaten by Awami League candidate Selina Hayat Ivy, who bagged over 69,000 votes than him and became the port city's mayor for the third straight term.
The BNP has refrained from nominating candidates for the ongoing elections to union parishads, municipalities and city corporations, citing government interference in the polls.
It has also been demanding an impartial interim government to hold the next general elections.
