Mahmudur arrested under Penal Code: MKA

Home Minister MK Alamgir on Thursday said Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman was arrested under the Bangladesh Penal Code (BPC), not under the Printing Presses and Publications (Declaration and Registration) Act 1973.

Emerging from a meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Ministry in Parliament, Alamgir said Mahmudur Rahman has been arrested in a case filed against him under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act 2006.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku told UNB that Mahmudur Rahman was arrested under the ICT Act for hurting Muslim’s sentiment and for his ‘evil’ efforts to confuse people by publicising instigative remarks.

He said no one will be spared if he or she hurts people’s religious sentiment and defames religion. “Action will be taken against them under the country’s ordinary law.”  

Besides, Tukus said, those try to instigate people by publicising derogatory remarks against religion will not be spared either.

Earlier in the morning, police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from his Karwanbazar office on charge of sedition.

Later, a Dhaka court placed Mahmudur Rahman on a 13-day remand.
