Shibir calls hartal for Thursday

Update : 09 Apr 2013, 10:29 AM

Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, the Student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, has called a countrywide daylong shutdown tomorrow to demand the unconditional release of its central president Delwar Hossain and to protest his “torture during remand”.

The organisation’s Secretary General Abdul Jabbar made the announcement through a press statement yesterday.

The statement alleged that the police was torturing Delwar Hossain at an undisclosed location. It also alleged that Hossain’s family was being harassed by law enforcers. It claimed that the hartal would be peaceful, but warned of dire consequences if the government tried to stop the organisation from enforcing the strike.

Police detectives arrested Shibir President Delwar Hossain from his sister’s house in Shyamoli on March 31. He was placed on a 14 day remand on April 1 for his alleged involvement in an explosion of crude hand-bombs on Mirpur Road in the capital on February 28.

Two days later, Shibir enforced a daylong hartal protesting his detention.
